BONEDALE FISHING REPORT #29
THE RIVER FLOWS AND SPENDS YOUR DREAM
I have a bit of art in the WORLD HEADQUARTERS, which I look at every morning. My favorite is the watercolor of a Rainbow hovering over a bed of river stone. The fish isn’t obvious–you have to look for her–which is what I like about the painting. Although there’s fishing to be had right now, I spend more time thinking about it than actually doing it. I organize fly boxes, fuss with gear and dig into tying materials. The other guides talk about secret fly patterns to pass the time, which is mostly ego-driven bullshit, but still interesting. A buddy of mine is driving an old ambulance down the west coast of Mexico–an area with miles of swamp, estuaries and flats. There also are huge fresh water rivers. We’re talking about an exploratory mission, and the talking is a big part of the fun. Tarpon have been seen, also Bonefish, but the logistics are a nightmare, adding to the appeal. We caught some type of giant freshwater Perch many years ago, and I had my best body-surfing day ever, before it ended with a curious bump from what I thought was a Tiger Shark. It’s hard to say for sure because the water was so muddy, but I do know it was big and interested, and more than enough to get me out of the water. I may not pull off the trip this year, but a plan has been loosely formed. For now, I’m pretty content to look at maps, ask questions and dream about another undiscovered watershed.
